Dumbarton Bridge

One of the great old bridges that span Rock Creek and the parkway alongside it; here, Dumbarton Bridge from 1915. Rather than a typical, straight-line bridge, this one is crescent-shaped as it crosses the creek and roadway below. The sidewalks flanking the bridge's roadway are supported by small arches which rest on the diagonal brackets seen along the upper left. Those in turn end at decorative sculpted corbels based on a life mask of Sioux chief Kicking Bear. The large arch at the bottom right allows parkway traffic to pass beneath the bridge.
